Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are also referred to as renal calculi, urolithiasis, or nephrolithiasis. They are hard deposits, which are formed inside our kidneys. 90% of kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate. When recognized earlier, Kidney stones usually do not cause any permanent damage, but passing them can be painful.kidney stones

Symptoms Of Kidney Stones

Symptoms associated with kidney stones are noticed only when it moves around and passes into the ureter. The ureter is a small tube, it connects the kidneys with the urinary bladder. When kidney stones get lodged in the ureter, it blocks the flow of urine, stops the flow, and causes inflammation in kidneys and spasm in the ureter. At this point, one may notice the following symptoms.

  • Sharp pain in the side and back, usually below ribs, sometimes pain may be unbearable, it may also radiate to the abdomen or groin area
  • Pain may come in wave and it usually fluctuates, it may shift as the stones change its position in the urinary tract
  • Pain and burning sensation during urination
  • Red or brown-colored urine
  • Persistent need to urinate, and yet not feeling satisfied
  • Urinating in a small amount
  • Nausea and vomiting in a few cases
  • Fever and chills because of infection

Time to See a Doctor

You should immediately seek medical attention if you encounter severe pain, nausea, vomiting, blood in urine, or difficulty in passing urine.

Causes Of Kidney Stones

It is often difficult to pinpoint a single cause responsible for kidney stones. Though, few factors aggravate the risk of the formation of kidney stones. Most of the time, once the doctor detects kidney stones, the patient is advised to avoid calcium and oxalate-rich food, but this not the only reason for kidney stones. There are many reasons for the formation of kidney stones in the body. Following is the list of factors that aggravate the body’s tendency to precipitate kidney stones.

Excess sugar

Excess sugar in diet results in an imbalance of minerals in our kidney. Sweets have fructose, which causes an imbalance in the ratio of calcium and magnesium in the body. Diet rich in sugar may increase the risk of kidney stones, this has been validated by research published in the British Medical Journal.

Soft Drinks Like Sodas and Colas

These soft drinks have phosphorus, which acidifies your urine, this promotes stone formation.

High Oxalate Foods

High Oxalate food includes spinach (palak), black pepper, chocolates, these food items may aggravate kidney stone formation.

Calcium Supplements

Calcium supplements usually come in the form of calcium carbonate. Calcium transport is facilitated by vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, and magnesium, many supplements lack in these compounds. Hence, it is vital to ensure the type of calcium supplement. Likewise, supplements such as vitamin C, excessive use of laxative, calcium based antacids, medicines of migraines and depression, can increase the risk of kidney stones.

Dehydration, obesity, certain surgeries like gastric bypass surgery, diseases like chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, renal tubular acidosis, cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism, recurrent urinary tract infection, also increases the risk of kidney stones.

Healthy Teeth

They say …. It all starts here … healthy mouth healthy body. Proper oral hygiene is about more than fresh breath and clean teeth. It is vital for maintaining good overall health. Your teeth are the first step in the digestive process, you take their help for chewing your food. Daily brushing with toothpaste and flossing are vital to a healthy smile, but nutrition is equally essential for your dental health.

Nutrition for Healthy Teeth

Nutrition for Healthy Teeth

It is important to consume a balanced diet with a variety of nutrient foods. The food we eat is the source of nutrients required for the renewal of tissues, fight infection, bone health, dental health, etc. likewise, by knowing how to eat healthily you can achieve optimum oral health which is vital for overall being. A nutritionally deficient diet may result in periodontal diseases and tooth loss.

Foods Needed for Optimum Oral Health

Calcium-rich food

Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in our body, it is a vital mineral and it strengthens the enamel, which is the outer covering of teeth. Enamel is 98% composed of calcium and phosphate ions, it is the most mineralized tissue in our body. Foods like brown rice, green leafy vegetables, oranges, peas, broccoli, cabbage, cheese, yogurt, and salmon are a good source of calcium. Having optimum calcium is vital at every age, while young children need calcium for the development of strong bones and teeth. Adults require calcium for the maintenance of healthy and strong teeth and skeleton. Deficiency of calcium can increase the risk of osteoporosis and periodontal diseases. Recommended calcium intake is based on age, it varies from 200-250 mg in babies to 1000-1200mg in adults.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus is vital for the development, maintenance, and repair of mineralized tissue like bones and teeth. Phosphorus can be easily obtained from daily diets, Lack of optimum levels of phosphorus results in joint pain, irritability, anxiety, loss of appetite, poor development of bone in children, fatigue, heart diseases, weak teeth. Phosphorus is usually abundant in cells and tissues, it is the second most abundant mineral in our body. The amount of phosphorus needed depends upon the age, it varies from 700 mg in adults to about 100 mg in infants. High levels of phosphorus can be toxic, it can result in diarrhea and affect the body’s ability to use other minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium.

Teeth Brushing

Teeth Brushing

The ratio of phosphorus and calcium is fixed in our body, the normal ratio of calcium and phosphorus is 2.5:1. When the level of phosphorus increases in blood because of underlying ailments such as diabetes, kidney disease, eating too much phosphorus, eating too little calcium, celiac disease and certain medication (antacids, insulin, ACE inhibitors, anticonvulsants, corticosteroids), alcoholism, to maintain phosphorous homeostasis, our bones and teeth release calcium to compensate. This leads to a decrease in bone density and weaker teeth. Phosphorus can be obtained from cereals, soya beans, and nuts like almonds, poultry, eggs, grapes, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and cucumbers. The deficiency of phosphorus can occur because of severe starvation.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays a vital role in the formation of healthy teeth, it enhances mineralization of alveolar bone, enamel, and dentine, it also maintains healthy gums. It promotes the absorption of calcium and regulates the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Natural sunlight, eggs, cereals, dairy products, and fish like tuna, etc are a good source of vitamin D. vitamin D plays an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial role in the oral cavity. Lack of Vitamin D results in a compromised immune system, which results in bacterial growth, increased local inflammation, and periodontal disease.

Smart snacking

Resist frequent snacking between meals, quench your urge to snack with healthy options like raw vegetables, salads, fruits, and plain yogurts. Practice healthy snacking and Remember to rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth after snacking, this will help you in keeping cavities at bay.

Smart snacking

Smart snacking

Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, they have the potential to damage enamel resulting in tooth decay. Food that is high on sugar and starch contributes to tooth decay and gum diseases. Choose your snacks and beverages wisely, replace soft drinks with fresh juices, and drink less soda. Increase your water consumption.

Practice good oral hygiene

Oral hygiene is a practice, it requires following regular brushing and keeping the mouth free from diseases like tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Oral hygiene should be practiced regularly to prevent dental diseases. It is vital to regularly brush and floss your teeth, schedule regular dentist visits to ensure healthy dental health. Ideally, the mouth should be cleaned after every meal, but brushing twice a day is sufficient to reduce the building up of plaque.

Practice good oral hygiene

Practice good oral hygiene

f anyone, it can severely impact the quality of one’s life.

Hair loss in general is called androgenic alopecia, it starts with gradual thinning, followed by diffuse hair loss. Unlike man, a woman’s hairline does not recede, and they never become bald. Hair loss can be frustrating and there can be many potential causes like underlying medical illness, medications, physical or emotional stress.

It is vital to see a dermatologist, in case you notice unusual hair loss. Emotional stress should always be addressed by a therapist.

The pattern of female hair loss

Ludwig classification is used to explain the pattern of female hair loss.

The pattern of female hair loss

The pattern of female hair loss

Type I –

it includes minimal thinning, it can be easily camouflaged with hairstyling techniques.

Type II –

it includes a decrease in volume of hair, and it is characterized by widening of the mid-line partition.

Type III –

it includes diffused thinning, and the scalp is easily visible.

Almost every woman will develop some degree of androgenic alopecia, it usually starts after puberty but becomes noticeable around menopause. The probability of female hair loss increases with age, and its risk is higher for the ones who have a hereditary. Before we understand androgenic alopecia, let us first understand the life cycle of a hair.

life cycle of a hair

life cycle of a hair

Each hair develops from a follicle, it is a small and narrow pocket in the skin. Each hair undergoes 3 phases.

1. Anagen(active growth) –

this phase lasts for almost 2 to 7 years

2. Catagen (transition phase) –

this phase lasts for almost 2 weeks, during this phase the hair shaft separates from the Hair follicle

3. Telogen (resting phase) –

this phase lasts for almost 3-4 months, it ends with the shedding of the hair.

Androgenic alopecia

Also known as androgenetic alopecia, it is a common form of hair loss. It is found both in man and in woman, though the pattern of baldness varies accordingly. This form of hair loss is related to a hormone called androgen especially dihydrotestosterone. An increase in levels of androgens leads to a shorter cycle of hair resulting in shorter and thinner hair.

Additionally, this is accompanied by delayed growth of new hair. Multiple factors like- PCOS, menopause, pregnancy, and birth control pills can cause androgenic alopecia. Other probable causes can be Telogen Effluvium (hair loss post-trauma like childbirth, malnutrition, surgery, and extreme stress), Anagen Effluvium(hair loss associated with chemotherapy), Alopecia Areata(hair loss associated with inflammatory reaction), Traction Alopecia(hair loss associated with localized trauma due to tight hairstyles).

Vitamin supplements for hair loss

Telogen Effluvium is a type of hair loss which is associated with malnutrition, it can be easily treated with the help of vitamin and mineral supplements such as Vitamin C, niacin, iron, biotin, and zinc. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, it is believed to promote hair growth. It also enhances the thickening of hair and controls hair loss.

Top foods to prevent hair loss

A good diet has the potential to prevent hair loss. Likewise, it will also promote hair growth and improves the quality of hair. Include a variety of well-balanced food in your diet,

Nuts

Nuts are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, copper, biotin, and iron. These vitamins and minerals are vital for healthy hair, they promote hair growth and prevents hair loss. Especially walnuts are full of omega 6 fatty acids, they are a good source of zinc, iron, and some trace of selenium.

Oysters

Oysters are rich in zinc

Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals like – omega 3 fatty acid, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, vitamin A, B, C, E, and K.

Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein, essential vitamins, selenium, sulfur, and zinc.

Eggs

Eggs

Spinach

Spinach is a good source of iron, folate, vitamin A and beta carotene.
Likewise, vegetables like Carrots, green peas, prunes, are a good source of Vitamin A, which is vital for the nourishing scalp. They improve the quality of hair and prevent hair loss.

Avoid hair mistakes

We often commit hair mistakes like – over usage of hair sprays, hair gels, and creams. These styling creams are often loaded with harsh chemicals, which are harmful to the scalp. Abstain frequent changing of shampoo and conditioner. Choose a mild shampoo and protect your scalp from sun, pollution, rainwater, and dust. Excess humidity will cause brittle hair and result in unwanted breakage.

Avoid over-styling your hair, heat tools can damage your hair and result in hair loss. Reduce the use of flat irons and blow dryers. Tight hair bands can cause traction alopecia, avoid hair extensions.

Reduce stress

Adopt a healthy lifestyle, reduce stress, and engage in regular exercise. Practice meditation and deep breathing exercises.

How to Reduce Gall Bladder Stones

Inspiration for this article came when my father was diagnosed with gall bladder stones, while he was suggested to go for cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal surgery), the nephropathy in me was not ready to surrender, so I decided to do some research myself and find answers to heal his condition with food as his primary medicine. With the help of certain modifications in his diet and lifestyle he managed to keep the symptoms and condition under control.

How to Reduce Gall Bladder Stones

How to Reduce Gall Bladder Stones

The gall bladder is a small pouch-like pear-shaped hollow organ, it is situated under your liver. Bile produced by the liver is stored and concentrated in gall bladder before being released into the small intestine. Bile is dark green to yellowish-brown in color, it helps in digestion of lipids in our body.

Gall bladder stones, also known as gallstones are mostly (about 80%) made up of cholesterol. The remaining 20% is constituted by bilirubin and calcium salts. The exact cause responsible for the formation of gallstones is still unknown. Few believe that excess cholesterol in bile is the causative factor, while others blame the excess of bilirubin in bile. Obesity, high fat diet, diabetes are few common risk factors associated with gallbladder stones.

Symptoms of gallbladder stones

Gallstones lead to abdominal pain in the upper right side, especially after consuming food rich in fats. The pain may last for a few hours and is often unbearable. Other symptoms like – vomiting, nausea, dark urine, clay-colored stool, burping, diarrhea, and indigestion may be present.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

while everybody is providing information about Coronavirus disease, I thought why not search for authentic knowledge, so the aim of writing this article is to quench my urge to know this disease completely so that I can help myself and others with optimum measures regarding safety and avoid any panic regarding this. The Source of this article is the data provided by WHO (world health organization) and UNICEF, I have further simplified it for easy understanding.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

Let Us Understand What Is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a large family of viruses, which are responsible for causing illness in humans and animals. Several coronaviruses can cause respiratory illness in humans, ranging from the common cold to severe diseases like middle east respiratory syndrome(MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS). Recently discovered COVID-19 comes under this category only. It is called ‘novel’ because it is a new strain of Coronavirus.

It was first identified in Wuhan, China and it is named Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). This virus can survive on the infected surface for several hours, therefore it is important to kill it with disinfectants.

Symptoms Of Coronavirus Disease

The most common symptoms are tiredness, fever, dry cough, body aches, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat. Some patients may also complain of diarrhea, severe cases may develop pneumonia or difficulty in breathing. These symptoms are usually mild in the beginning and they become severe gradually. Some people may be asymptomatic after getting infected, they do not show any signs and symptoms of illness. As per the data, about 80% recover without needing any special treatment. Around 1 out of 6 infected people may present complications because of COVID-19. It has been observed that elderly people and people who have underlying medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease may develop severe illness.

How Does Coronavirus Disease Spread?

This disease is mainly transmitted through contact with the person who has the virus. It spreads through small droplets from nose or mouth which are spread when the infected person coughs or exhales. These droplets land on the surfaces and objects, when a healthy person touches these infected surfaces and later touches his eyes, nose or mouth he will also get the Coronavirus disease.

A healthy person can also catch Coronavirus infection disease by breathing in the droplets from an infected person. This is the reason, it is advised to maintain a distance of more than 1 meter (3 feet) from an infected person.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

Since the future is still unpredicted, it is advised to take precautions to reduce the chances of infection.

Frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with alcohol-based hand rub (at least 60% alcohol) or soap and water. This helps in killing the virus on your hands.

Hands Washing

Avoid close contact and Maintain 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and others especially with anyone who has flu-like symptoms.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, this will stop the transfer of viruses in the body.

Maintain respiratory hygiene, cover your mouth while coughing and sneezing. Use flexed elbow or tissue and throw the tissue into a closed bin.

Stay home, especially if you feel unwell. Seek medical attention, if you have a fever accompanied by cough and difficulty in breathing.

Avoid traveling to places where COVID – 19 is spreading widely. Check the travel advisory for the place before planning any travel in case of an emergency. Carry your hand sanitizer, a packet of disposable tissues and disinfecting wipes.

In case you have recently visited areas where COVID-19 is spreading, self isolate yourself, stay at home. Seek medical attention if you feel unwell.

The use of a medical mask is advised if you have respiratory symptoms like coughing or sneezing, to protect other people. In case of the absence of any symptoms, there is no need to wear any medical mask. Dispose of the mask properly to ensure protection against transmitting the disease. It is important to understand that, using masks alone is not sufficient in protecting the infection, frequent hand wash, avoiding close contact with an infected person, maintaining respiratory hygiene. CDC does not recommend wearing a medical mask if one does not have COVID-19.

Stay healthy, eat a healthy and balanced diet. Avoid alcohol or tobacco-based product. Ensure you consume foods that help in increasing your overall immunity.

Update yourself with news from trusted sources, like WHO (world health organization), CDC(centers for disease control), UNICEF and government organization of the respective state.

Do not panic, keep yourself well informed, know the facts but avoid being panic.

It’s the loveliest week of any year!! The love week or valentine’s week is here! Like any relationship, conflicts are part of your love life as well. Maintaining a strong sense of connection is vital to resolve any conflict. Conflict in a relationship can make anybody feel attacked or threatened, weak and vulnerable.

How to Resolve your Conflicts and Feel Connected

How to Resolve your Conflicts and Feel Connected

When things are done by another person upset you and you feel that you are under siege. In such a scenario there is little possibility of a constructive response from your side. And if by any chance you choose the silence, it will ultimately do more harm than good. This will eventually shatter your relationship completely. It is natural to choose silence when we are hurt because of conflict. But falling back on the negative pattern is of no use, rather choose to fix the issues with the positive energy of communication.

Choose to Communicate

Address your differences at an early stage, and choose to initiate the communication. I often find couples complaining, that they felt alone, not wanted, scared as if the other person no longer cared for him or her. While we all are in the midst of inevitable stressors of life, a fulfilled relationship is a true blessing.

Choose to Communicate

Choose to Communicate

Conflicts are Opportunities for Growth

Instead of being defensive and hammering your point of view, try to resolve the issues. Take your conflicts as opportunities of life, they are there to help you align with your partner. Conflicts are blessings in disguise, they give you the opportunity to embrace, understand and appreciate the differences. Make an honest effort to understand your partner’s experience. Opt for growth in relationships over your comfort and urge to win an argument.

Break the Flow of Conflict

Break the flow and pattern of the conflict with the help of some humor. Seize the moments of argument and turn them into opportunities to laugh and love. Be proactive, try to avoid the routine triggers of arguments. Humor is the easiest and fastest shortcut to happiness, it not only breaks the flow of arguments but also releases the tension.

Focus on Good Memories

Focus on the good memories. Taking your attention on what you desire rather than what you don’t desire, is always helpful in resolving relationship problems. The world is full of things that are annoying to you, appreciate the good and focus on what good your partner contributes in your life. Soon you will find yourself engrossed in good memories. Align your mutual passion and values in life.

Contribute Authentic Listening

Be authentic, honestly listen to your partner and truly connect with your partner. Conflict gives you an opportunity to understand your partner on a deeper level, it gives you a platform to take the relationship to the next level. Conflicts are transitions to a higher level, something better than the present.

Love yourself Unconditionally

The one person who is always with you is “YOU”, yourself. So, cherish yourself and love yourself unconditionally. Take the responsibility of keeping yourself happy and content. Your needs are supposed to be fulfilled by you. Save yourself by relying on your partner for everything in life. Do not crave for their appreciation and praise, give yourself the respect you demand from others.

Plan Ahead

Anticipation is power, plan your roles and responsibilities. Choose to meet your personal needs, this will provide you the power and zeal to help your partner meet his or her needs. Readiness to help, to love is vital in every relationship.

Reignite the Love

It is much easier to fall in love than to maintain the same level of passion later in life. Thrills wane away with time, your biology has a contribution to this. Once we achieve our goals in life we often forget the deep connection we once felt. So this valentine, relive your passions, feel deeply connected, be adventurous, and feel your affection. We often read books and articles about how to improve our health, fitness, profession, business, etc but very rarely do we seek help for reigniting our relationships. Relationships are often taken for granted. Remember a fulfilled relationship can easily ensure happiness, good health, and success in life.

Choose to Communicate

Choose to Communicate

Remember, It is natural to have conflicts in a relationship so, the next time when you find yourself in a conflicting situation choose to see the positive aspect. Decide to focus on what you want, a stable future together. Choose emotional closeness, intimacy, and communication over any conflict.

How to Treating Symptoms of Adenomyosis

Before we understand Adenomyosis, let us understand what a healthy female reproductive system is. The female reproductive system of a woman consists of a muscular organ known as the uterus (commonly referred to as the womb). Uterus bears the responsibility of development of embryo and fetus. It is incredibly strong because of the distinctive tissue layers which make up its wall.

How to Treating Symptoms of Adenomyosis

How to Treating Symptoms of Adenomyosis

The uterus has 3 layers known as Endometrium (innermost layer, has highly vascular connective tissue, it supports embryo and fetus during pregnancy), myometrium (contains layers of visceral muscle tissue, it allows expansion and contraction of the uterus during pregnancy and childbirth respectively), Perimetrium (covers the outer surface of uterus). The barrier between Endometrium and myometrium is known as the junctional zone.

When this barrier is broken because of certain trauma or stress, tissues of Endometrium grow outwards through the incision. Adenomyosis is a medical condition that is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue in the myometrium. Subsequently, the thickness of the myometrium increases forming a mass. This displaced tissue follows the normal menstrual cycle – thickening, breaking down and bleeding during each cycle. This can result in the enlarged uterus and painful and heavy bleeding during the menstrual cycle.

Although the cause of Adenomyosis is still unknown, it can affect any age group and is more prevalent in women between the ages of 35 years to 50 years.

Symptoms of Adenomyosis

Patients with Adenomyosis presents various symptoms like – painful and profuse menstrual bleeding, which results in anemia, fatigue, and dizziness due to blood loss during the menstrual cycle, painful cramps, pressure on the bladder, chronic pain in the pelvic region, and pain during sexual intercourse.

Bleeding between periods, enlarged and tender uterus, at times one may also feel pain while having bowel movements.
About 30% -33% of females may be asymptomatic while others may experience severe symptoms. Clinical signs may include, uterine enlargement causing pelvic fullness, tender uterus, infertility.

The precise cause of Adenomyosis is unknown. Few associate it with certain trauma to the uterus such as – cesarean section and surgical termination of pregnancy

Direct invasion of the cells of Endometrium into the muscles of the uterine wall may result in Adenomyosis. Uterine incisions during the cesarean section promote direct invasion of endometrial cells into the uterus wall.

Hormonal factors such as elevated levels of prolactin and estrogen may increase the risk of Adenomyosis.

Complications associated with Adenomyosis

Prolonged heavy bleeding may develop into chronic anemia which may cause fatigue. Excessive bleeding also contributes to disruption of routine lifestyle

Diagnosis of Adenomyosis can be confirmed with the help of signs and symptoms, further confirmation can be done with the help of pelvic examination which presents an enlarged and tender uterus. Ultrasound imaging and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) help in detecting the presence of Adenomyosis.

Usually, Adenomyosis gets naturally treated after menopause, treatment depends on the age and severity of the signs and symptoms. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory drugs, hormone medications, and in severe pain, your doctor may recommend a hysterectomy. To ease pelvic pain and cramping during menstrual cycle-related Adenomyosis you can adopt certain lifestyle and home remedies.

Home Remedies for Treating Symptoms of Adenomyosis

It is important to treat Adenomyosis because it not only affects the daily routine activity of patient but heavy bleeding may also lead to weakness and anemia. Home remedies cannot replace the medical management, they should be used along with the prescribed treatment plan.
