Spotting the first strand of white hair can be intimidating for many. While, it is normal to expect greying of hair in your late 30’s and 40’s, greying in your 20’s can be a sign that you are a victim of premature greying. Greying of hair occurs when the melanocytes present at the base of the hair have stopped making the pigment called melanin. The process of the production of melanin by melanocytes is called melanogenesis.
Premature greying of hair can affect both men and women and it can also affect personal attractiveness, and self-esteem leading to many negative effects like low self-confidence and depression.
Besides age, there can be nutritional, environmental, and autoimmune factors responsible for premature greying of hair. Following is the list of common factors responsible for the greying of hair.
Premature greying of hair can occur because of deficiency of Vitamin E, vitamin B-6, Vitamin B-12, and Biotin. Deficiency in nutrition can adversely affect the process of pigmentation, likewise, nutritional supplements can help in fighting premature greying of hair. A report published in the Journal Development in 2015, suggested that deficiency of Vitamin D3, Vitamin B-12, and copper had some effect on the premature greying of hair. Similar findings were reported in a study published in the International Journal of Trichology in 2016.

Oxidative stress causes the release of free radicals, which have a damaging effect on cells of the body. This causes early aging and the development of diseases. Therefore, antioxidants are essential, they counteract the effect of free radicals in the body and delays the process of aging.
Certain medical conditions like thyroid dysfunction and alopecia areata increase the risk of early graying of hair.
Research studies have reported depletion in melanocytes (cells responsible for the color of hair) under stress. Smoking is also linked to early greying of hair. Compared to non-smokers, smokers have 2.5 times more possibility of having premature graying of hair.
Your kitchen is full of several ingredients that can help you slow down the process of premature greying of hair. Here is a list of few ingredients that can prevent early greying of hair.
Coconut oil is natural fatty oil, it is widely used for cooking and it has multiple health benefits. It nourishes the scalp and improves the quality of hair. Coconut oil fights fungal infection and keeps the scalp healthy. Likewise, it reduces flaking and itching on the scalp.
It seals the moisture in the hair and prevents spilt ends and breaking of hair. When you infuse your coconut oil with curry leaves, it fights premature greying of hair. Curry leaves are a good source of beta – carotene, amino acids, antioxidants, and proteins. Curry leaves also prevent hair loss and promote hair growth.
You can prepare this concoction, by mixing a handful of curry leaves in one cup of coconut oil, boil it for 5-8 minutes. Allow it to cool and apply this on your scalp. You can also make a paste of curry leaves and yogurt, apply it on your scalp and air, wash it after 30 minutes with water. Repeat this 2-3 times a day.
Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, it is effective in preventing premature greying of hair. Amla acts as a natural diuretic, liver tonic, antipyretic, laxative, anti-inflammatory, and hair tonic. Oil infused with amla strengthens hair and promotes healthy hair. Dried amla powder can be used to wash hair, it improves hair hygiene, pigmentation, and hair growth. You can drink fresh amla juice every day and also massage it on your scalp once weekly.
Onion contains antibacterial properties, onion packs promotes blood circulation in the scalp. Regular use of onion pack reverse premature greying, it makes hair shiny and lustrous.
Black seed, commonly known as kalonji is a common condiment that is found to be an effective remedy for premature greying of hair. It also curbs hair fall and thinning of hair.
Mustard oil is rich in antioxidants and selenium, it is strengthened and nourishes the hair.
Include herbal supplements like ashwagandha, black sesame seeds, ginger, amaranth, ghee, and wheatgrass juice in your diet.
While, you can adopt the above-mentioned remedies at home, making a few lifestyle changes can help you keep a check on gray hairs. Get enough vitamins like – vitamin B-12, Biotin, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin A. eat the optimum amount of minerals like- zinc, iron, magnesium, selenium, and copper in your diet. Avoid damaging your health from smoking and sun, restrain from using harsh shampoos, bleaching, and other chemicals.
