Let Us Understand What Is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a large family of viruses, which are responsible for causing illness in humans and animals. Several coronaviruses can cause respiratory illness in humans, ranging from the common cold to severe diseases like middle east respiratory syndrome(MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS). Recently discovered COVID-19 comes under this category only. It is called ‘novel’ because it is a new strain of Coronavirus.

It was first identified in Wuhan, China and it is named Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). This virus can survive on the infected surface for several hours, therefore it is important to kill it with disinfectants.

Symptoms Of Coronavirus Disease

The most common symptoms are tiredness, fever, dry cough, body aches, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat. Some patients may also complain of diarrhea, severe cases may develop pneumonia or difficulty in breathing. These symptoms are usually mild in the beginning and they become severe gradually. Some people may be asymptomatic after getting infected, they do not show any signs and symptoms of illness. As per the data, about 80% recover without needing any special treatment. Around 1 out of 6 infected people may present complications because of COVID-19. It has been observed that elderly people and people who have underlying medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease may develop severe illness.

How Does Coronavirus Disease Spread?

This disease is mainly transmitted through contact with the person who has the virus. It spreads through small droplets from nose or mouth which are spread when the infected person coughs or exhales. These droplets land on the surfaces and objects, when a healthy person touches these infected surfaces and later touches his eyes, nose or mouth he will also get the Coronavirus disease.

A healthy person can also catch Coronavirus infection disease by breathing in the droplets from an infected person. This is the reason, it is advised to maintain a distance of more than 1 meter (3 feet) from an infected person.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

Since the future is still unpredicted, it is advised to take precautions to reduce the chances of infection.

Frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with alcohol-based hand rub (at least 60% alcohol) or soap and water. This helps in killing the virus on your hands.
