According to the results of a new pilot study done by the researchers at Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Israel, they developed a novel, vibrating pill-size capsule that helps treat chronic idiopathic constipation and constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome – without the need for medications. Dr. Yishai Ron, who headed the research team of this study, presented the study results at Digestive Disease Week 2014 in Chicago.

This study comprises of 26 patients who all suffer from chronic constipation or irritable bowel syndrome. They were given the capsule twice per week and they filled out questionnaires on their toilet habits. All these patients were asked to refrain from any laxatives or other constipation treatments two weeks before initiating the study. Results of the study indicated that the capsule is shown to double the number of weekly bowel movements of the participants.

The participants of the study reported to have had increased bowel movements, from two to four times per week. They also reported a reduction in constipation symptoms, difficulty defecating and incomplete evacuation. The study found no noticeable major side effects from this capsule. The capsule is non-reusable and is expelled out of the body with the bowel movement. Dr. Ron opined that up to half of patients suffering from constipation are not happy with the pharmacologic treatment that they are presently getting, either due to ineffectiveness, undesirable side effects, or the risk of developing dependency with long-term use.

This capsule contains a small vibrating engine that is programmed to vibrate six to eight hours post ingestion. The vibrations caused by this capsule promote contractions in the intestines, which induces the natural course of digestive tract. Though the capsule is still in the testing stage, the researchers believe that the study results points to a potential alternative for medical treatment that avoids a host of unpleasant and undesirable side effects.
