What Causes Irritated Vulva How To Treat Irritated Vulva

The outer portion of the female genital is known as vulva.  It is the most sensitive area of the skin and the proper care and treatment is required to prevent vulva irritation. There are many potential causes vulva irritation. The causes range from contact dermatitis to other benign or severe conditions. In most of the cases, simple home remedies are enough to treat the irritated vulva.

What Are The Causes Of Irritated Vulva

The potential causes of irritated vulva includes:

1. Hormonal Medications Or Menopause

Menopause bring changes in the level of hormones. Hormonal imbalance may be responsible for irritated vulva.  Birth control pills or hormonal drugs also reduce the vaginal secretion and lead to dryness and irritation of vagina.

2. Allergy Or Dermatitis

The vagina is very sensitive female body.  Allergy to soaps, moisturizers or other chemicals may lead to the irritation of vulva.

3. Sweating

When we wear tight under clothes the sweat gets trapped especially during hot weather and after intense working out. This causes irritation and itching.

4. Eczema

Eczema is a very common skin condition that can affects any part of the body including vulva.  It causes itch and irritation.

5. Bacterial Infection

Bacterial infection such as bacterial vaginosis and urinary tract infection lead to a number of symptoms such as irritated vulva, burning in urine and pain.

6. Folliculitis

Folliculitis is the infection of ingrown hair or hair follicle.  It typically happens after shaving or waxing of the affected area.

7. Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is a skin condition that leads to inflammation and scaly rash.

8. Yeast Infection

Yeast infection is also known as vaginal thrush. It causes irritation, white discharge and itching.

9. Genital Psoriasis

About 30 to 60% of patients suffering from psoriasis suffer from genital psoriasis. Genital psoriasis causes silvery and red, dry scales that causes itching. It is an autoimmune condition.

10. Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea, trichomonas and genital herpes causes vulvar irritation.

11. Cancer Of Vulva

The symptoms of the cancer of vulva includes persistent stinging, itching, bleeding or pale skin. There may be appearance of rash or ulcers and pain in the pelvis. It is a rare condition.

The treatment of irritated vulva depends on the cause and discomfort.  For example if the irritation is caused due to some sexually transmitted diseases, proper treatment and antibiotic course may be required. In some cases of STD long term management is required. Antibiotics are prescribed by doctor in case of bacterialvaginosis. If irritation is caused due to fungal infection thananti-fungal treatment is required.

To treat irritated full vulva in general you need to avoid the irritants. Home remedies for irritated vulva are discussed below.

#1. Wear Cotton Under Cloth

The first thing you need to do to treat irritated vulva is start wearing cotton under-clothes. Cotton clothes are breathable and prevents skin infections.

#2. Stop Using Perfume, Soap Detergent And Other Vaginal Cosmetics

Your skin is sensitive. Use of chemicals such as perfumes, harsh soaps and detergents irritate vagina.

#3. Probiotics

Probiotics contain good bacteria that maintains the normal flora of the body and prevents infection and bacterial growth.

#4. Apple Cider Vinegar Bath

Apple cider vinegar creates an environment, which is not good for the growth fungi and bacteria.

To the bathtub filled with water add a half-cup apple cider vinegar and soak yourself in it for about 20 minutes.

*Baking soda and oatmeal bath as also recommended to treat irritated Vulva.

#5. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal. It relieves itch and irritation.  Apply coconut oil to vagina a few times a day.

If irritated vulva do not get treated by home remedies or if the condition gets worse better talk to your doctor.
