What Causes Burning Vagina? Treatment Of Burning In Vagina

Vaginal burning is a very common complaint but it is important to understand the different causes of burning in vagina for proper diagnosis and treatment.

What Causes Vaginal Burning?

There are many causes of burning in vagina such as sexually transmitted diseases, menopause, irritants and rough sex. Below in our article we have discussed possible causes of burning in vagina and possible treatment.

#1. Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis happens due to infection of certain kinds of bacteria that affect the normal balance of vagina. Bacterial vaginosis cause a number of symptoms including burning sensation in the vagina especially during urination. Other symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include white or grey vaginal discharge, itch, pain and foul fishy like odour. Bacterial vaginosis mostly affects the females aged 15-44. It increases the chances of a female to contract sexually transmitted diseases. This condition is treated by course of antibiotics.

#2. Irritation

Vaginal skin is very sensitive. Certain things such as fabrics, soap and perfume that encounters the skin of vagina cause irritation and burning. Other symptoms include stinging pain, rawness and itching. The best way is to avoid chemical containing harsh soaps and perfumes. Wear cotton underclothes and avoid other irritants. A few female may need medication.

#3. Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infection is very common complaint in females. It is infection of bladder urethra and kidneys. The symptoms of urinary tract infection include blood in urine, pain in lower abdomen, pain while urinating, need to urinate often and suddenly and tired body. Your doctor may prescribe the antibiotic course, which will clear up urinary tract infection around 5 days. Besides, you need to drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated and flush out the infection.

#4. Menopause

When a woman’s body transits from reproductive to non-reproductive phase there is change in the level of hormone that affects the vagina. Menopause is very common reason for vaginal burning especially during the sex. Menopause transition cause other symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes, reduce sex drive, mood changes, vaginal dryness, difficulty sleeping and headache.

#5. Genital Contact Allergies

In some females the immune system is hypersensitive to certain substances such as spermicides, sperm, latex, lubricants, contraceptive rubber diaphragms, feminine hygiene sprays and topical and oral medications. When such females encounter thesesubstances, it causes allergy resulting in vagina burning. The best solution is no doubt to avoid allergens that stimulate vaginal irritation and burning.

#6. Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, chalmydia, trichomoniasis and shyphilis not only cause vaginal burning but also pain during urination, vagina discharge and vaginal bleeding between the periods. Sexually transmitted disease contracts on having sex with your infected partner and is common in females of reproductive age. See your doctor as soon as possible as some of the sexual transmitted disease can lead to serious complications.

Possible Complication Of Vaginal Burning

Vaginal burning is not a disease but a symptom. It may not be a matter of concern but maybe an indication of STD or bacterial vaginosis. If left untreated bacterial vaginosis and STD may lead to serious complicationsespecially if the female is pregnant. Some STD can pass to the baby and some may lead to preterm delivery. It is always better to consult your doctor if you suspect STD after coming in contact with an infected partner.

Are There Home Remedies To Treat Vaginal Burning?

Treatment of vaginal burning depends on the cause. A few things that may help include ice pack, cold compress and application of petroleum jelly. Avoid irritants and wear cotton underclothes. Avoid douche, perfumed soaps, and perfumed sanitary products.
