Rubeola, also known as measles, is a highly transmissible viral illness. Measles infections during pregnancy do not result in defects in the baby, but pregnant women and newborns are more vulnerable to measles-related medical complications than the general population. Rubella can be passed from mother to fetus and cause complications, especially in unvaccinated women. Pneumonia and hospitalization are examples of these complications.

Measles During Pregnancy: How To Take Care Of yourself And Expecting Baby

Measles infections during pregnancy can also result in stillbirth, miscarriage, a low birth weight, and a greater chance of premature birth. So, how can you safeguard yourself and the baby you’re expecting against the measles virus? We respond to some frequently asked questions.

What Are The Typical Symptoms And Signs Of Measles Infection, And How Is It Transmitted?

The virus is extremely transmissible and resides in the mucus of the infected person’s nose and throat. Coughing and sneezing are common ways for it to pass on from person to person, and it may stay airborne and contagious for as long as two hours. As a result, even if a measles-infected person coughed or sneezed two hours prior to your arrival, you could still catch the illness from breathing in the air in the space. When someone has the measles, he or she is contagious for four days before and four days following the rash appears. The virus that causes rubella can be spread through an infected person’s saliva or mucus. Measles is an airborne infection that spreads through droplets from coughing or sneezing. The virus may also pass from infected person to infected person via contaminated items, kissing, handshakes, shared beverages or foods. The Typical Symptoms And Signs Of Measles Infection

Measles is most frequently characterized by fever, exhaustion, coughing, itchy or red eyes, runny nose, Koplik spots (white lesions on the inner cheek), and a raised rash. Rubella symptoms include a low fever and sore throat, followed by a rash on the face that spreads throughout the body. It may take seven and 21 days after being exposed to the measles virus for symptoms to appear. Other symptoms include cough, a sore throat, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle or joint pain.

Although routine childhood vaccination has reduced the incidence of rubella. This usually mild infection can cause serious complications in unvaccinated pregnant women. The occurrence of rubella in pregnant women is comparable to that of non-pregnant women, with vaccination serving as the only preventive measure.

What Problems Can Measles Infection Cause During Pregnancy?

Although rubella is a mild disease with simple treatments, it can cause serious fetal complications in not immunized pregnant women. The degree of severity of the disease is determined by the time it is contracted. If the infection is acquired during the first trimester, complications are most likely to happen. What Problems Can Measles Infection Cause During Pregnancy?

The following are possible side effects of contracting rubella during pregnancy: Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) occurs when the virus infects the fetus through the mother. It is characterized by low birth weight and serious congenital anomalies like heart defects. Glaucoma and cataracts are two examples of eye problems in unborn babies following rubella infection. Other complications include deafness, growth retardation and learning disabilities, diabetes, liver, and spleen problems in new born.

CRS cannot be cured, despite some symptoms being managed. Because there is no cure, women must get vaccinated before becoming pregnant.

Recommendations for Vaccines

Women who intend to become pregnant should consult their doctor to ensure that they are fully vaccinated before becoming pregnant. Recommendations for Vaccines

MMR vaccine should not be administered to pregnant women Pregnant women who are not currently immunized should postpone getting the MMR vaccine until after giving birth because it is an attenuated (weakened) live virus vaccine.

After receiving the MMR vaccine, adult women of childbearing age should wait at least four weeks before trying to get pregnant. Contact your doctor if you contract rubella or are exposed to it while pregnant.

Pregnancy Causes Of Pain In Abdomen

It is common for expecting mothers to experience pain in abdomen. However, it is very important for pregnant female to have knowledge about causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy so that she knows when she we needs to consult a doctor or report in emergency. In our article, we will discuss the causes of pain in abdomen during pregnancy and treatment but first let us have a brief discussion over the abdominal problems during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Causes Of Pain In Abdomen

Pregnancy Causes Of Pain In Abdomen

Abdominal Problems during Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the time when the female body goes through lots of changes. Her uterus expands with the growth of the baby due to which the abdominal organs shift and her ligaments stretch in order to adjust according to these changes. This is why little degree of abdominal pain is normal during pregnancy. In most cases, mild-to-moderate pain during pregnancy is completely harmless and is mostly due to stretching of ligaments, indigestion and constipation. These are not serious conditions and there is nothing to worry.  However, a pregnant woman should not always take pain in abdomen lightly especially if abdominal pain accompanies nausea, vaginal discharge and fever. This is why it is very important for a pregnant female to be able to distinguish between what kind of abdominal pain is an alarming sign.

What Are The Causes Of Pain In Abdomen During Pregnancy

There are many potential causes of pain in abdomen during pregnancy. However, in most of the cases nothing is serious. Below are the several causes of pain in abdomen during pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is one of thepotential causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy. The condition occurs when the fertilized egg gets implant anywhere outside the uterus typically in one of the fallopian tube. The symptoms of ectopic pregnancy include Pain in abdomen or pelvic region, tenderness, bleeding or vaginal spotting, pain getting worse during physical activity, coughing or passing bowel and pain in the shoulder tip. In addition, in some cases there may be a sign of shock such as dizziness, pale skin, faintness and racing pulse.

Miscarriage

Miscarriage during first trimester is common. The very first symptom of miscarriage is vaginal bleeding followed with abdominal pain a few hours or few days later. Pain of miscarriage is similar to menstrual cramps but is rhythmic and stronger. Some females also experience pain in lower back or pelvic pressure.

Preterm labour –

In preterm labour a female starts having contraction before 37 weeks of pregnancy.  If a pregnant woman experiences increase in the vaginal discharge or change in the type of discharge during second or third trimester she should report this to her doctor. Get yourself checked by your doctor if you experience increase pressure in pelvic area, low back pain, spotting or bleeding, menstrual like cramping or more than 4 contraction in an hour.

Placental abruption –

Placental abruption may be defined as complete or partial separation of the placenta from the uterus. If this happens before the baby is born, it is serious. The symptoms of placentation abruption may include obvious or sudden bleeding, back pain, frequent contraction and uterine tenderness. In case you notice a decrease in the activity of baby immediately, see your doctor. Approximately a baby moves 10 times in 2 hours. If you do not feel, your baby’s movements consult your healthcare provider soon.

Urinary tract infection during pregnancy –

Expecting mothers are more susceptible to urinary tract infection. The symptoms include the pain and burning during urination, pain and discomfort in lower abdomen, uncontrollable and frequent urge to pass urine and foul smelling or cloudy urine. If there is high fever with chills, shaking, sweat, nausea and vomiting and possibly there is blood in urine this maybe sign that infection has spread to the kidneys.

Pre-eclampsia –

It is a condition where the pregnant female after 20 weeks of pregnancy has high blood pressure and there is protein in urine. The other symptoms include abdominal pain, headache, nausea and vomiting if pre-eclampsia is severe.

Please note not all pain in abdomen during pregnancy is serious. Common causes of harmless abdominal pain during pregnancy includes constipation, indigestion, gas, and bloating. During second trimester of female may experience round ligament pain which is stabbing and sharp dull pain due to the stretching of pelvic ligaments. After pregnancy female may also experience Braxton Hicks contraction that are irregular and infrequent.

One of the major concerns of lactating mothers is “Is she producing enough milk?”  In most of the cases where mothers suspect low milk production, there is nothing wrong with mothers or their ability to produce milk but the real problem is that her baby is unable to latch to her breast.

Lactating Mother

If your baby is putting on weight it is the best indication that you are producing enough milk. Other sign and symptoms that suggest lactating mother is producing enough milk are:

How many times baby Feeds:

Your baby is feeding about 7 to 8 times in a day and sleeps well after feeding.

Any discomfort while feeding:

you don’t feel any pain or discomfort while feeding your new born. After feeding the baby your breast feels soft and light.

How Much Urine infant Passes a day:

Newborn is passing urine 7 to 8 times in a day.

After considering the above signs and symptoms still if you think your milk supply is low, then follow the tips given below to increase breast milk supply naturally:

How To Increase Breast Milk Supply Naturally

More you nurse your baby, the more the baby suckling will stimulate the breast to produce more milk. If your baby sleeps a lot gently wake him up after 2 to 3 hours and encourage him to feed.

Avoid formula milk or supplementation to increase breast milk supply

More the demand more the milk is produced but if you will give formula milk to your baby she won’t be hungry and won’t demand breast milk and your milk supply will decrease.

Try to schedule your sleep timings according to your baby so that you can get enough sleep. Try to stay relaxed and calm. Take the help of other family members or a babysitter to take care of the household and take care of the baby.

Pump in between breastfeeding to increase breast milk supply

What is Secondary Infertility?

Secondary Infertility is defined as a condition where the body is incapable to conceive or become pregnant after giving birth to the first baby. In secondary infertility the mother is not able to conceive or not able to carry the baby to full-term despite having a successful first pregnancy. Secondary Infertility- Causes, Signs, and Treatment

Causes of Secondary Infertility in Men and Women

Secondary Infertility may occur in both men and women. Cause of secondary infertility can originate only to the mother or father or a combination of both. Causes of Secondary Infertility in Men and Women

Causes of Secondary Infertility in Women

The main causes for secondary infertility in women include

  • Quality and Quantity of Eggs: Women have a limited eggs supply and the number of eggs in the ovaries gradually decrease as they age. The remaining eggs are more likely to have chromosomal problems. Hence, it becomes more difficult to conceive after the first pregnancy.
  • Issue with fallopian tubes: Fallopian tubes carry the eggs to the uterus in the process of ovulation. Pelvic infections such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia can block the fallopian tubes and obstruct the flow of eggs.
  • Uterus problems: Several uterus related problems can be the reason for secondary infertility. Scarring can happen during a C-Sec delivery that can form adhesions in the uterus and further interfere with future pregnancies. Other uterine problems include retained placenta, polyps, and fibroids.
  • Endometriosis: This condition occurs when tissues that must grow inside the uterus grows elsewhere such as inside the ovaries or bowel surfaces. Endometriosis can be a common cause for secondary infertility.
  • PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a type of hormonal disorder causing irregular and longer menstrual periods. A woman suffering from PCOS produces more male hormones and fails to release eggs regularly.
  • Breastfeeding: Although not a very common cause, breastfeeding women who feed their babies’ breast milk for longer durations fail to ovulate and produce eggs regularly for conception.
  • Weight Gain: Sudden weight gain after the first pregnancy can alter the chances of conceiving again. The reason is weight gain causes ovary dysfunction in some women. Causes of Secondary Infertility in Women

Causes of Secondary Infertility in Men

Most common causes of secondary infertility in men include

  • Less testosterone: Decline in testosterone levels can alter sperm production that has direct impact on fertility. Reduce testosterone levels are caused due to injury, age, or any medical condition.
  • Poor quality semen: The quality of semen is very important as it is the fluid that carries the sperms. As men age, the quality of the semen declines which impacts fertility.
  • Prostate enlargement: Enlargement of the prostate gland can lead to less ejaculation and lower sperm count.
  • Drugs that impact sperm count and quality: Certain medications and antibiotics can affect sperm quality thus directly having an impact on fertility.

Signs of Secondary Infertility

If the woman and man are younger than 35 and have unprotected sex for 12 months without getting pregnant, can be suffering from secondary infertility. Women and men less than age of 30 can also suffer from secondary infertility due to low sperm counts, irregular menstrual cycle, pelvic inflammatory diseases, and other hormonal disorders.

Treatment for Secondary Infertility

Secondary Infertility treatment may sound scary for couples who have had no issues with first pregnancy. Nevertheless, the treatment for secondary infertility is similar to primary infertility.

  • Medications: Certain medications like letrozole and clomiphene are prescribed to increase ovulation in women suffering from ovulation disorders.
  • Anti-oxidants: Anti-oxidants and anti-ageing medications are prescribed to men to improve semen quality and increase the chances of fertility.
  • Surgery: Those women suffering from uterine problems, surgeries are performed to remove polyps, fibroids, or scar tissues if any. In men, surgery is performed to repair testicular variocele.
  • In vitro fertilization: This is the most common treatment of secondary infertility advised by doctors. This is a surgical procedure where the eggs and sperms are retrieved and fertilized in the lab to form an embryo. The fertilized embryo is then transferred to the uterus where it implants and forms the baby.
  • Intrauterine insemination: This is a procedure which involves inserting the sperms artificially into the uterus to increase the chances of fertilization.

Conclusion:

Depending on the medical condition and circumstances both the man and woman would need evaluation. Secondary infertility can be stressful and surprising. Do not cope with it alone. If you are suffering from secondary infertility, seek emotional support from your loved ones, family, and friends. Reach out for medical support at the right time to give a shot at all the chances you may have.

Safe Cosmetic Products in Pregnancy

When a woman becomes pregnant, a phase begins where she must focus on taking care of her health and nutrition for the sake of the fetus. Still, she will also experience moments when she will notice changes in her body as well as in her skin So you should also consider what cosmetics you can use, both for makeup and whether or not you can use hair dyes. How to Choose the Safe Cosmetic Products in Pregnancy

In addition to the uncertainties and doubts about the use of some potentially harmful substances, it is also possible that during the wait the epidermis manifests problems never before encountered. The itching and irritation are standard, related to increased progesterone in the early stage of pregnancy. From the fourth month of gestation, a period of greater well-being for women generally begins as the first symptoms seem to stabilize, but problems related to skin irritability persist. A product that has always been used can now cause unexpected reactions.

What Cosmetics To Use In Pregnancy

For this reason, it is better than before putting on makeup, as usual, the cosmetics that you have at home are evaluated and tested to see if they now make you react or not. If this is the case, it will be useful to look for new alternatives, especially those that are natural, choosing certified organic cosmetics that contain the least amount of ingredients possible. What Cosmetics To Use In Pregnancy

Read The Labels Carefully

Cosmetics are composed of active ingredients that allow you to structure the emulsion correctly and make it useful. In most cases, these ingredients are chemicals derived from petroleum, such as petroleum jelly, parabens, paraffin, mineral oils, and silicones. They are substances capable of imparting a better spreading capacity to the product, which however can irritate or dry out the skin, acting more in this sense on delicate skin such as that of a pregnant woman. Therefore, it is necessary to pay close attention to the presence of these ingredients in the various products. Read The Labels Carefully

It is a good habit then to carefully read the label of the products that you are going to buy during pregnancy. Cosmetic ingredients must be reported on the label in descending order of concentration, according to the INCI code (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). It is preferable to choose a product where the chemical components such as petroleum jelly or silicones are at the end of the list. Another recommendation is to prefer products with few ingredients, to reduce the risk of skin reactions.

Ingredients To Avoid

There are also ingredients commonly used in cosmetics that are considered potentially dangerous in pregnancy. If the products used come from the United States, the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) classifies the ingredients by identifying possible harmful substances during pregnancy, assigning each letter a letter of the alphabet. Therefore, the ingredients can belong to categories A, B, C, D and X – only ingredients classified as A and B are considered safe during pregnancy. However, for an inexperienced eye, it can be not easy to analyze the ingredients shown on the cosmetic package, or it may be that what we buy is not identified by the letters that we have mentioned. Therefore it is essential to know which ingredients are best to avoid.

Retinol, ordinary in anti-ageing and acne creams, is considered potentially harmful to the development of the fetus, as well as all derivatives of vitamin A. Benzoyl peroxide, which is often used in acne creams or to promote Teeth whitening belongs to category C. It is not recommended while you are pregnant. Even salicylic acid belongs to the same category, as well as hydroquinone often used for skin blemishes. Cosmetics To Use In Pregnancy

On the other hand, you have to be careful with deodorants that contain aluminium chloride hexahydrate, with astringent, anti-sweat and antibacterial properties. It is classified in category C. Therefore; it should be avoided in favour of deodorants that do not contain it or natural alternatives.

The c ompuestos potentially harmful chemicals can be replaced with vegetable derivatives such as almond oil, jojoba oil and wheat germ oil. Alternatively, you can focus on pregnancy-specific products, formulated appropriately to contain no hazardous substances.

Is It Reasonable To Use Hair Dye?

Many hair dyes contain ammonia, which can be harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. The dyes permanent and semipermanent hair now considered safe in pregnancy, taking into account the minimum amount that comes into contact with skin. However, there are many ammonia-free dyes on the market, so it is best to go for this type of dye. As for henna dyes, although natural, they should be used with caution, to avoid the risk of dermatitis. Many doctors recommend waiting until at least the second trimester before colouring your hair. And the same precautions should be taken for other treatments that involve the use of chemicals, such as ironing: better wait.

It is also better to postpone all very aggressive beauty treatments, such as peeling, laser or injections, although in-depth studies have not been carried out on how it can affect us during pregnancy.

Choose Your Makeup Well.

During pregnancy, the woman can put on makeup without any problem, choosing as we have mentioned, the right products. Still, also, you must take into account buying the right quality products and a specific origin, meticulously checking when they expire. If you decide to try a new cosmetic, watch out for side effects like sudden allergies.

Choose Your Makeup Well.

Dimethicone, a substance found in many face powders and foundations, cannot be absorbed through the skin and therefore cannot be considered harmful; Also, mascara, lipsticks, and eyeshadows do not contain ingredients that can overcome the epidermis. However, a piece of general advice is to avoid products that contain nickel or paraffin.

Best Ways to Dry Up Your Breast Milk Supply

Weaning is tough for even mother. Weaning slowly and without stress is what is suggested. But there may be reasons you may want your breast milk to dry quickly. The best time for weaning is when both infant and mother is ready for it. However, sometimes, even without your wish, you need to discontinue breastfeeding.

Best Ways to Dry Up Your Breast Milk Supply

Many factors such as baby’s age or mother’s diet and health affects the time taken by breast milk to dry. In some women, milk production stops just after a few days of weaning, but in some, it takes several weeks. Abrupt weaning is no doubt uncomfortable and may lead to infection so better consult your doctor, and then you can try the methods discussed below to dry up breast milk.

1.Do Not Nurse Baby To Dry up Breast Milk –

It is a rule, more you breastfeed more milk is formed so do not breastfeed or stimulate breast. The time for the breast to dry up depends on how long you have breastfed. You may try following tips discussed below:
Wear a supportive bra that will hold breast at its place.
To ease pain and inflammation use ice packs.

2. Sage to Dry up Breast –

Sage is a herb that helps with suppressing oversupply and weaning. However, not much is known if sage is safe for infants who consume breast milk after you take sage. So consult your doctor, and then you may start with a small amount of sage tea.

Other herbs that may help dry up breast are parsley, peppermint and jasmine. Consume them only after consulting your doctor.

3.Cabbage to Dry up Breast-

If cabbage leaves are used for a long duration, it suppresses breast milk.
Wash the green leaves of cabbage. Freeze it in the refrigerator. Place chilled cabbage leaves over each breast and then put your bra. Change leaves every 2 hours.

In addition, cabbage leaves reduce swelling and ease the symptoms of engorgement.

4.Vitamin B to Dry up Breast –

High doses of vitamin B1, B12 and B6 also suppress lactation. However, there is not much known about the side effects of taking high doses of vitamin B1, B6 and B12 for long. So again, talk to your health care provider about it.

5.Avoid Hot Showers to Dry up Breast-

If you are trying to dry up breast milk hot shower is the wrong choice as hot shower may temporarily ease engorgement but also stimulates the breast milk production. So better, avoid it.

6.Birth Control Pills to Dry up Breast –

Contraceptive pills containing hormone estrogen suppress lactation. May, not all women experience notable suppression but mostly does. Do not start the birth control pill on your own. Consult your doctor about timing to start the medicine.

*Some also may advise you to restrict fluids to dry up breast milk. However, we do not recommend this because it is essential for a nursing mother to stay hydrated.

*Some may advise you to get pregnant. However, let me tell you pregnancy is not a reliable way to dry up the breast milk and not a wise choice if you are not healthy enough and mentally prepared to deliver another baby.

Lactation suppression may be uncomfortable. Abruptly stopping nursing may lead to infection or blocked milk duct. In the case of engorgement express little milk for relief. If you experience pain or low fever, call your doctor. The plugged duct may cause breast tenderness. It is advised to gently massage the area for relief. In the case of mastitis where due to breast infection, there is redness, warmth, breast swelling and malaise antibiotics may be prescribed.

*For drying up breast milk, it is always better to consult a certified lactation consultant to avoid any discomfort and prevent infection.

How to Burp a Baby

Babies are so delicate that for new parents, sometimes it becomes very sturdy to manage them. The toughest part is to make the small one burp.

But no need to worry anymore. Read this article and try any of the four ways mentioned below on how to burp a baby.

How to Burp a Baby

How to Burp a Baby

But let us first know why it is essential to make a baby burp?

While drinking milk a baby swallows a little air. If these air bubbles get trapped in the tummy of the small ones it causes discomfort. Also, even before the baby’s stomach is full, the air entering the baby’s tummy renders her the feeling of fullness, and she may not drink milk adequately.

Thus, it is essential to take a break while feeding or switching on to the other breast and make the child burp. In comparison to the breastfed babies, bottle-fed babies need more burping as they swallow more air while feeding. So when the bottle is half emptied, it is better to give a small break and make the baby burp. If your baby spits up often or suffers from gastroesophagealreflux symptoms, you will find burping them very beneficial.

Four Easy Ways to Burp a Baby

1.By holding the baby on your shoulder or chest-

This is the most common way to burp a baby. For this hold the baby against your chest in such a way that her chin rests on your shoulder. By supporting the baby with one of your hands, pat her back. You may also rub her back.

2.Gently pressing baby’s belly to your shoulder-

For this hold the baby high, so that the baby’s belly is pressed by your shoulders. This will create a gentle pressure to coax out the burp. Now by supporting the baby with one of your hands, pat her back with the other hand. While doing this, make sure that the baby is breathing comfortably. Also, do not slump the baby too far. It is better if while you check the placement of the baby’s head in the mirror.

3.Making your baby sit on your lap-

Make your baby sit on your lap with her face away from you. With one of your hands support her body. Your palms should support her chest, and your fingers should support her jaw and chin. Now by making your child leaning forward pat her back.

4.Baby across your knees-

Place your baby across your knees with her face down and her body perpendicular to your body. By supporting her jaw and chin with one of your hands, pat the baby’s back with the other hand. While doing so make sure not to lower the baby’s head lower as compared to rest of her body.

While making the baby burp, do not tap the baby’s back roughly, but also do not be very gentle as light tapping won’t give you any results.

If your child sleeps while feeding does not bother much about the burp, but make sure to tap her for 10-15 minutes before you make her lie in her bed on her back.

We hope you find this article helpful. Happy parenting.
