The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland (gland which secretes their products directly into the blood); it is located in the neck. It is a butterfly-shaped gland which produces thyroid hormones,i.e. T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (tetraiodothyronine), it regulates your metabolic processes in your body. Metabolic rate is a measurement of the number of calories that your body consumes or utilises at rest. Your thyroid gland helps in regulating your body temperature, maintains the rhythm of your heart, it maintains harmony among all the organs in your body. Underactive thyroid gland results in drop-in thyroid hormone production.

How to Reduce Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Likewise, insufficient production of this hormone is called hypothyroidism. Adequate synthesis of thyroid hormones requires dietary iodine and TSH (stimulating thyroid hormone) which is released by the pituitary gland present in the brain. Pituitary gland adjusts the production of T3 and T4 depending upon the level of these hormones in your blood. The good news is you can efficiently manage your thyroid gland with the help of certain changes in your lifestyle.

General symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are Fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance, brittle nails, swelling in hands and feet, dry skin, irritability, depression, slower heart rate, constipation, and thinning of hair on the scalp. The condition can vary from mild to severe depending upon the deficiency of thyroid gland.

•Focus on a happy life

Your thyroid gland works in tandem with your adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are endocrine glands. They are present on the top of your kidneys, and when you experience stress they release cortisol. Cortisol can have a deleterious effect on your metabolic rate, which directly affects the production of thyroid hormones. So keep your focus on happiness and include little things that you love in your life.

•Adopt asanas and yoga to activate thyroid gland

Regular exercise will help you in managing your thyroid gland; it will also boost your immunity and metabolism. Asana like – Sarvahita asana, Sarvangasana, Padma matsyasana are believed to activate your thyroid gland. Include these asanas in your daily exercise routine to improve your overall strength and metabolism. These asanas are recommended as they act as a massage of the thyroid gland, enhancing the secretion of thyroid hormones in the body.

•Eat a Healthy Diet

A well-balanced meal plan can definitely help you in managing your thyroid gland. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables. Eat small portion at regular intervals.

•Yogurt

Yogurt is a natural source of vitamin D, and probiotic. Include milk and milk products in your diet, it can help in maintaining your thyroid levels.

Almonds, brazil nuts, and cashews are a great source of iron; they are also excellent in selenium which supports the adequate functioning of the thyroid gland. Selenium is vital for conversion of thyroxine into T3.

•Seafood

If you are a non-vegetarian, include fish, seaweed, and shrimp in your diet. They are an excellent source of iodine

•Head and foot massage

It is believed that hypothyroidism can precipitate gout. A gout is a form of arthritis; it is characterized by sudden and severe episodes of pain, swelling, tenderness, and redness in the joints. It occurs because of accumulation of crystals of uric acid in your joints Massaging Aranda oil onto your head, may provide you relief from pain and discomfort.

Foot massage can also help you in releasing stress and pain; it will help you fight fatigue.

•Limit your quantity of soy food

Soy (soybeans) is a type of legume. It contains a high amount of protein and is a good source of isoflavones (plant-based estrogens),and they were a traditional staple of specific Asian diets,but recently it has become popular among others also.

Soy food like tofu, edamame, miso, and soy milk has been thought to interfere with the body’s ability to absorb medication which provides synthetic thyroid hormone. Some studies suggest, inhibition of absorption of thyroid supplement increasing the dosage of thyroid hormone. Therefore, it is advised to keep a watch on your quantity of soy products.
