What are the Causes of Itchy Nipples?

Pregnancy –

Changes in hormones, expansion of breast and increase in the breast milk flow causes nipple itching during pregnancy. During pregnancy, a female may also experience sore and tender nipples and breast heaviness. To treat pregnancy related nipple itching you may try application of chemical free lotion, wearing suitable bra and using my pregnancy detergent and soap. Apply cocoa butter rich in vitamin E or lanolin lotion on your breasts in the morning and evening. Make sure to wear well-fitting bra that allows good airflow and avoid tight bra.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis is skin inflammation that includes allergic dermatitis, eczema and other types of skin infections and irritation. Dermatitis may be caused due to friction to hard clothing, running and use of harsh soaps and detergents on the skin. On the other hand, eczema is a skin condition that can affect any part of the body. Signs of nipple eczema includes burning, itching, pain, lesions that leak fluid, plague formation or peeling of skin. To treat dermatitis related itching of nipple, use moisturizers to hydrate the skin, drink lots of water, avoid scratching the affected area and avoid things that cause allergic reactions. In addition, take medications as suggested by a doctor. Your doctor may prescribe antihistamines in case of allergy and antibiotics if infections develops.

Yeast infection

Some females suffer from fungal infection that causes yeast infection. Fungal infections are usually caused due to fungal candida albicans. However, thrush may develop due to unknown causes. If itchy nipples is caused due to yeast infection female experiences nipple or breast pain, pink areola on nipple, dry or scaly skin, white rash, and cracked nipples. Nipple burning, tingling and tenderness is also common. To treat the fungal infection your doctor will prescribe over-the-counter medications and topical anti fungal creams. To ease discomfort and itching make sure to clean your towel, bra and breast pad with soap and in hot water. Make sure to dry them in sun if possible. Sterilise all the pumping equipment for at least five minutes.  If you use breast pads, keep changing them throughout the day.

Mastitis – 

Mastitis is inflammation of the breast tissues that involves infections. The condition results into redness, swelling breast pain and breast itching. We also develop fevers and chills. This condition is treated with antibiotics. It is recommended to drink lots of water and take plenty of rest to reduce the symptoms of mastitis.

Paget’s disease – 

Paget’s disease of nipple is a rare condition that is associated with breast cancer. The condition causes eczema like changes to the nipple skin and areola. This condition is treated with variety of approaches such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical removal of the part or all of the breast.

1. Calendula- It is traditional home remedies to treat yeast infection. Calendula is anti-inflammatory and kills fungi. It also treats yeast infections.
Grind some leaves of calendula, and apply it to your vaginal region. Repeat this 3 times a day. You can also use calendula lotion and ointment.

2. Yogurt- Yogurt contains healthy live culture also known as probiotics. Thus, it is very effective in treating infection caused by yeast by balancing the level of acid-bacteria. It is also very safe and easily available at home.
Take 2 two teaspoons of yogurt and insert into your vagina. Also, apply it externally to the affected areas.
You may add 2 tablespoons of yogurt and add it or bath tub. Soak yourself in it for 15 minutes. Take a bath with plain water and pat your self-dry.
A pregnant woman can also use curd as a douche after diluting it with Luke warm water.

4. Garlic to Treat Yeast Infection During Pregnancy- Garlic is most effective and safest home remedies to treat any infection especially a yeast infection. As it is very safe you can use it, during pregnancy also.
Take a clove of garlic. Peel it off. Put clove into your vagina before sleeping. In the morning, remove the garlic clove. Discard the clove. This can kill the yeast infection overnight. Repeat this in the case of serious infection.

Take 4 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Add it to a cup of lukewarm water. Drink this concoction 2 times a day.
Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the hot water bath. Soak yourself in it for a half hour. Take a bath with plain water and pat yourself dry.
Dilute a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with half cup of plain water. Apply this to the affected area. After 30 minutes, rinse it with warm water.
6. Oregano Oil- It is an amazing oil. It is typically used in a case of yeast infection that is external and is serious. Take a few drops of clove oil and 2 drops of oregano oil. Mix well and apply to the affected part. This will reduce candida and will kill the fungi.
7. Coconut Oil- It is an easily available and effective home remedies to treat a yeast infection during pregnancy. It has antifungal properties and is also very safe.

8. Black Seeds- To treat candida and yeast infection during pregnancy you need to boost your immune system. Black seeds are very effective for this purpose. Take 2 teaspoons of black seeds daily. Also, increase the intake of vitamin c rich foods.

Besides above home remedies to treat a yeast infection during pregnancy wear cotton panties. Keep your underwear dry and change them if they get moist and warm. Avoid wearing tight bottoms. Do not wash your vagina with perfumes soaps, drink plenty of water and reduce intake of caffeine.
