The intensity of a sunburn depends on how long you are exposed to the sun, sun intensity and skin type. In less than 15 minutes of sun exposure, sunburn can happen. Sunburn may take just a few seconds when skin is exposed to any other source of intense UV light or non-shielding welding arcs.

Summer sun rays are stronger, and so sunburn is more common in summers. Also, the intensity of the sun is at the peak between 11 am to 4 pm. Cloud cover to some extent blocks UV rays,but even on an overcast day UV radiation can pass through the clouds. At high altitudes, UV rays accumulate more and chances of sunburn increases.

Any skin type may develop sunburn, but the response of every skin type to exposure to UV rays varies.

Fitzpatrick Skin Photo Type Classification and Response to UV Rays:

Type I: Skin is Pale white. Do not tan but burns quickly.

Type II: Skin is White. It burns easily but tans with difficulty

Type III: Skin is White skin. Tans easily and also may burn.

Type IV: Skin is Light brown/olive skin that tans easily and hardly burns.

Type V: Skin is Brown skin. It tans easily but usually burns.

Type VI: Skin is Black skin. On exposure to UV rays, it turned darker and is unlikely to burn.

Home Remedies For Sunburn

To soothe sunburn, we have enlisted a few home remedies that are almost available in everyone’s kitchen.

1. Cold Compress-

The first home remedy for stinging sunburn should always be cold compress that will immediately provide cooling and comfort. Wrap a few pieces of ice in cheesecloth and apply to the skin for a few minutes. Repeat this a few times in a day.

2. Aloe Vera For Sunburn-

Aloe vera is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and has a cooling effect. Extract gel of fresh aloe vera leaf and apply to the affected part, After 15 minutes rinse it off. Repeat this 2-3 times in a day.

3. Black Tea For Sunburn-

Black tea is anti-inflammatory and relieves sunburn. Make black tea and refrigerate it. Use cool black tea to wash the affected area.

4. Apple cider Vinegar For Burn-

Apple cider vinegar is rich in malice acid that speeds up healing. Also being acidic it prevents secondary infection. Mix apple cider vinegar and water in equal amounts and with the help of a cotton ball apply to the affected part to ease burning pain.

5. Oatmeal For Burn- 

Oatmeal soothes inflammation, burning and itching. Add a cup of oatmeal to the bathtub filled with water and soak yourself in it for 20 minutes.

6. Essential Oil For Sunburn-

Essential oil not only soothes burn and renders a cooling effect but are also anti-microbial and prevent secondary infection. Mix a few drops of any essential oil such as lavender oil or eucalyptus essential oil to a tablespoon of coconut oil add apply to sunburn. Repeat this a few times in a day.

Prevention is always the best option. It is still better than before stepping out in the sun wear sunscreen, hat or scarf to avoid direct sun exposure. Also, it is advised to avoid stepping out in the sun between 11 am to 5 pm especially in summers when the sun heat is at the peak. Still, if you have to step out, walk in shades. Sunburn should be taken seriously because frequent sunburn poses a risk of skin cancer.

We advise you not to itch your skin or peel as there is chances of infection and permanent scarring. Drink lots of water and keep your skin moisturized.
