Every fertile woman goes through a menstrual cycle every month. A normal menstrual cycle is usually about 28 days. But even if the period occurs 7 days before or after 7 days it is considered normal. However, some women may have a long menstrual cycle and their cycle may be about 45 days to 60 days. In that case, the periods will be regular. If the periods are irregular in duration of more than 3 cycles and is delayed more than 35 days then it is considered as delayed menstruation.

Delayed menstruation is caused due to lack of ovulation. Usually, ovulation occurs on the 14 to 16 days of the menstrual cycle. If fertilization does not take place periods occur. Even if the ovulation is delayed periods occur in the lack of fertilization. However, in some women periods may also occur in the absence of ovulation. Delayed menstruation can be caused due to hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovarian disease, stress, breastfeeding, improper diet, anorexia nervosa, certain medications, severer exercise, malnutrition, heavy smoking and severe illness.
Approaching menopause and puberty also cause delayed menstruation for a few cycles.

Delayed menstruation may be accompanied by cramps, bloating of the stomach, irritation, nausea, fatigue and heavy bleeding or clots during periods.

If you are suffering from delayed menstruation the first thing you need to do is check if you are pregnant or not. If urine or blood test confirms that you are not pregnant, your doctor may ask you to have certain tests to confirm the cause of delayed menstruation. The tests recommended are thyroid function tests, ovarian function test, prolactin test, and male hormone test. Ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI may also be done to get into the root cause.

What is the Treatment of Delayed Menstruation

The treatment of delayed menstruation depends on the cause. Dietary or lifestyle changes, certain medicines, and surgery may be done depending upon the cause of delayed menstruation.

Home Remedies for Delayed Menstruation

1.Ginger- Ginger regulates the menstrual cycle. Also, it relieves pain. If you are suffering from delayed menses or scanty menses then add a teaspoon of fresh ginger to a cup of water and boil it. Add sugar to taste. Drink this concoction 3 times in a day for a month.

2. Sesame seeds- This is one of the best home remedies to regulate the menstrual cycle as it balances the level of hormones. Sesame seeds are rich in lignans that help the excess of hormones to bind. Also, the essential fatty acid present in it promotes the hormone production. Roast sesame seeds. Grind it and add jaggery to it and take a teaspoon of this every day empty stomach. Eat this for a few minutes.

3. Aloe Vera- Aloe Vera regulated your hormones and thus treat problems related to periods. Extract fresh juice of aloe vera and take it empty stomach for 3 months.

4. Cinnamon- Add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the glass of milk and drink it once in a few weeks. Cinnamon contains hydroxy chalcone that regulates the level of insulin and thus regular periods.

5. Turmeric- Turmeric balances hormone and stimulates the menstrual flow. It also relieves pain. Add a glass of milk and add a pinch of turmeric to it. Drink this for a week.
