The skin folds present outside the vagina is labia majora which is fattier and larger. The inner lip or the folds of skin between outer labia and leads to the vagina is known as labia minora. Labia protects the clitoris and vagina from injury and irritation. Labia may vary in size from women to women. However, due to allergies, cyst, infection and other medical condition may cause swelling and pain.

The labia pain may be accompanied by genital burning and itching, vaginal discharge, foul smell, and bump on labia. The pain is usually during intercourse, sitting and walking.

What are the Causes of Labial Pain

1. Vulvovaginitis-

It is inflammation of Labia Minora caused due to irritation due to sanitary napkins, dirty hands, and soiled linens. This condition causes pain during walking and urinating.

2. Candidiasis-

Candidiasis is a fungal infection of vagina characterized by itching and burning of the vagina. Candidiasis is usually caused due to unprotected sex.

3. Bartholinitis-

It is inflammation of Bartholin gland. It is caused due to staphylococci infection.

4. Bacterial vaginosis-

Overgrowth of harmful bacteria in vagina causes bacterial vaginosis. It is caused following douche or having sex with multiple partners.

5. Dryness of vagina-

In the absence of proper lubrication vagina gets inflamed during sexual act as a result of friction.

6. Allergies-

Perfumed soaps detergents, latex in the condom and specific fabric to which you are allergic will cause labia t swell.

7. Bartholin Cyst-

Barthloin cyst develops due to blocking of Bartholin glands that lies outside the vagina. Most of the times women is unaware of the presence of Bartholin cyst unless it gets infected. Infected Bartholin cyst causes swelling and labial pain.

8. Boil on labia-

If there is a boil on labia, there is pain and inflammation.

What is the treatment of labial pain

The treatment of labial pain depends on its cause. Your doctor may prescribe antifungal creams in case of yeast infection, and evidence of bacterial infection antibiotics are given. If there is some allergy, then steroids cream are suggested. In the case of Bartholin cyst, it needs to be drained after being lanced or is surgically removed.

Self-care also plays a vital role in the treatment of labial pain. Do not douche. Wear lose underclothes that allow airflow. Avoid latex condoms if you are allergic to it. Avoid cleaning your vagina using perfumed soaps. Refrains yourself from using scented feminine products as they may affect the healthy pH balance and healthy flora of the vagina.

Home Remedies to Treat Labial Pain

Tea tree oil-

Tea tree oil is the best home remedy for labial pain due to yeast infection. It is antifungal, reduces swelling and eases the itch. Add 2-3drops of tea tree oil to one tablespoon of coconut oil. Mix well and soak a tampon in it. Insert the tampon into your vagina and leave it for 2 hours.

2. Coconut oil for lubrication-

If sex is painful due improper lubrication use coconut oil as a lubricant.

3. Apple cider vinegar-

Apple cider vinegar treats any fungal infection by balancing pH of vaginal and creating an environment unsuitable for the yeast to thrive. Dilute apple cider vinegar by adding water in equal amounts. Wash your intimate area with this solution two times in a day.

4. Sitz bath in case of Bartholin cyst-

To minimize the swelling caused due to Bartholin cyst try a sitz bath. Fill a bathtub with warm water and sit making sure that your vaginal area is covered with warm water. Soak the intimate area for 15 minutes. Repeat this two times in a day.

5. Yogurt-

Yogurt contains good bacteria and restores the natural flora of vagina. Apply yogurt directly to swollen labia. Alternatively soaks a tampon with yogurt and insert it into the vagina for 2 hours. Repeat this two time in a day.

* Also add yogurt to your daily diet.

6. Hot compress-

Hot compress is a beneficial way especially if the labial pain is due to pimples or boil on labia. Hot compress softens the boil, encourages drainage and ease pain and inflammation. Soak a cotton ball in hot water. Wring to squeeze excess of water and place the cotton ball on your vagina.

* Water should be hot but of bearable temperature.

Repeat this for a few time in a day.
