9 Home Remedies for Period Pain or Menstrual Pain

How to Reduce Period Pain

Menstruation is a natural physiological phenomenon and part of every female life. But when it comes to period pain those 5-7 days are quite annoying. Pain during the period is caused because of prostaglandins that causes the uterine to contract.

Menstrual pain may be dull or throbbing pain radiated to lower back and thigs, Some women also complain of the tenderness of breast, nausea and headache during periods. Menstrual cramps subside in 2-3 days. In some females, pains and other accompanying symptoms are experienced before the onset of periods and is known as premenstrual symptoms.

Fennel Seeds-

Fennel is phytoestrogenic, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic. It relaxes muscles of the uterus and relieves the pain a ddiscomfort of periods. Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to a glass of water and boil it. Remove from heat and strain. Add a teaspoon of honey and drink it two times in a day.

Holy basil leaves-

Holy basil leave is very useful in easing cramps due to the presence of caffeic acid. It is a natural pain-killer and analgesic. Add a few basil leaves to a cup of boiling water and steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink this solution 3-4 times in a day. Alternatively, you may also crush a handful of basil leaves and extract its juice. Add two teaspoon of juice to a cup of warm water and drink the concoction three times in a day.

Application of heat on the lower abdomen is useful in controlling the period pain as heat releases the muscles. Place a heating pad on the lower back and lower abdomen. You may also use a plastic bottle filled with hot water for the same purpose. Apply heat till you are comfortable. Taking a hot shower too make you relax and ease the pain.

Papaya-

Papaya is anti-inflammatory. It is rich in iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C and carotene. It soothes the walls of the uterus and eases muscles. Add papaya to your diet before and during periods.

Chamomile tea-

Chamomile is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. It reduces spasmodic contractions and relaxes the muscles of the uterus. Step a chamomile tea bag in a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Strain and drink chamomile tea two times on a day a week before the period due date.

Ginger tea-

Ginger lowers the level of prostaglandins that is known to cause menstrual cramps. Steep a few pieces of ginger for 15 minutes. Strain and drink the concoction. You can drink this tea 2-3 times in a day.

Cinnamon –

Cinnamon is anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and antispasmodic. It is also an excellent source of calcium, iron, manganese and dietary fibre. Stir one-fourth teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of steaming water. Wait for 5 minutes and then add a teaspoon of honey. Sip it slowly.

Black strap molasses-

Blackstrap molasses is rich in magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, vitamin B6, selenium and calcium. It minimises blood clots and soothes the uterine muscle walls. Add two teaspoon of blackstrap molasses to a cup of warm water and drink it. It also regulates irregular periods. Add one-fourth cup of parsley in a bowl of steaming water and steep for 5 minutes. Strain and drink the solution two times in a day.

Parsley-

Parsley is rich in two compounds myristicin and apiol. It stimulates the menstrual process and relieves period pain. Drink parsley tea two times in a day.

Along with the home, remedies try yoga and light exercises. Drink lots of water. Avoid carbonated drink, fatty foods, coffee and processed foods. In case the menstrual pain is severe do consult your gynaecologist.
