Migraine and headache is a very common issue for both sex. However, females are more tend to suffer from it. Most of the female experiencing migraines remember that the first attack occurred around the time of starting of their menstrual bleeding.
Sometime period migraine is so intense that it affects the quality of your life and work.
In this article we will learn how to deal with menstrual migraine.
Most commonly female suffering from menstrual migraine development during the first three days of her periods. This is attributed to the lowering level of oestrogen hormone in the body. Also this is the time of month when the production of prostaglandins or the chemical that is associated with the pain increases.
Many females have reported a link between menstruation and migraine. However, the exact mechanism is not known it is considered that the falling level of oestrogen affect pain sensation pathways in our brain.
It is not possible to completely prevent menstrual migraine. However, there are home remedies that will help you to decrease severity and frequency.
Low level of magnesium worsens the symptoms of menstrual migraine. Epsom salt contains magnesium. It eases muscle tension and stress and thus relieves menstrual headache.
Epsom salt bath
Fill the bathtub with water and add half cup of Epsom salt to it. Soak yourself in it for 20 minutes. The magnesium bath will help the body to absorb the nutrient and reduce the pain and inflammation.
If not want to take a magnesium bath whip up magnesium rich smoothie. Go for almond, banana or avocado milk blend.
Willow bark is natural pain reliever. It is rich in salicin. Salicin is a compound similar to asprin. Willow bark is a natural home remedy for menstrual migraine.
Steep a piece of willow bark in boiling water for about 5 to 10 minutes. Strain and drink the concoction for relief.
Ginger is as effective as NSAIDS in relieving pain. It is anti-inflammatory. It reduces menstrual cramps as well as headaches.
Drink ginger tea to alleviate the symptoms. To a cup of steaming water add a piece of ginger. Let it steep for about 10 minutes. Strain and drink it warm. You may also add a pinch of turmeric and teaspoon lemon juice to it.
Caffeine block the receptors of adenosine and relieves menstrual migraine. It has been found that during migraine attack the level of adenosine rises in the blood. To compact menstrual migraine drink a cup of hot coffee. However, do remember that excess of coffee can worsen your symptoms especially if you are not drinking enough water.
One more thing you need to do if you think you are suffering from menstrual migraine is to maintain a symptom diary. The symptom diary will help you to see how often the headache happens and at what point in your menstrual cycle.
To relieve headache apply cold towel on your forehead or back of your neck. Make sure not to apply ice directly to your forehead as it may cause chilblain. Always wrap icein a tissue paper or soft cotton cloth before applying to your skin. You may also apply a warm compress to relax the muscle and elevate headache.
In some female migraine increases with the sensitivity to light. If in your case migraine symptoms increases when exposed to light better sit in a dim lit for dark room. Turn off the lights and if use essential oil such as peppermint or Lavender oil for ultimate relaxation from period headache.
