Bartholin glands are two in number and are small in size; they are located under the skin in the female genital area. They are present on both the sides of the labia. Labia are the folds of skin which surrounds the urethra and vagina. One cannot see them in routine.

Bartholin glands are responsible for secreting the fluid which helps in moistening and lubricating the outer genital area, also known as the vulva. This fluid reaches near vagina with the help of two tiny tubes known as Bartholin ducts.

When Bartholin ducts are obstructed, fluid accumulates in the gland; this results in the formation of a cyst. These cysts are usually small in size and are often painless. Few go away without being noticed, but if the gland or duct gets infected, it may result in the development of an abscess.

The exact cause of the Bartholin gland cyst is yet not known. Bartholin duct can be blocked because of various reasons like injury, infection, swelling and thick mucus. They are common in a woman in their reproductive age. Infection of the cyst may be due to bacteria like E.coli.

Few Bartholin gland cysts do not need any treatment; they heal themselves. Small cysts usually go un-noticed and are asymptomatic, but a large cyst may be felt like a lump in the genital area. But infected cysts may cause discomfort. There can be some swelling, fever, and redness in the area. One may also experience discomfort during routine activities like walking and sitting; few also report discomfort during sex.
